Character.AI bans sexual content for everyone, its free plan has added ads, slow mode and daily caps through 2026, and Trustpilot reviewers complain about weak memory and repetitive replies. Janitor AI is the most generous: its help center says chat on its own model is unlimited for free accounts, with about 9,000 tokens of memory. Nomi’s free plan has a daily cap of 50 messages but no end date. SpicyChat and Talkie have ad-supported free tiers whose limits aren’t fully published, while Kindroid’s free use ends after a one-time preview.
Which Character AI alternative has the best memory?
Nomi and Kindroid. Both are companion apps built around one relationship rather than a character library. Nomi builds short, medium and long-term memory automatically. Kindroid combines memory you write and edit with automatic long-term recall, and its Ultra and MAX add-ons extend it. Character hubs like Janitor AI and SpicyChat depend on context size, which is short on free tiers, so long chats lose detail.
Are Character AI alternatives safe for teens?
Mostly not. Janitor AI, SpicyChat, Chub AI, Saucepan AI, Kindroid and Nomi are all adults-only. Zeta allows users from 13 with a guardian’s consent, but Korean lawmakers said in October 2026 that its filters let self-harm and sexual content through. Talkie’s terms allow users from age 14 in the US, but a March 2026 news investigation found romantic and self-harm themes in its Teenager Mode. Several former Character.AI rivals closed or lost an app-store listing in 2026. The original wsup.ai shut on June 19, 2026; a separate site called WSUP AI says it isn’t affiliated, and old accounts didn’t carry over. Botify AI’s iPhone app has been gone since April 2026, though its web and Android versions work. Xoul AI left Google Play in June 2026, Linky AI’s iPhone app is no longer on the US App Store, and Kalon AI’s site says its AI features are down while it rebuilds.
