The short version

Worth a look if

  • You want unlimited free roleplay chat on a hosted model, plus a daily allowance of stronger premium models.
  • You already pay for an outside model and want to bring your own key. Saucepan charges nothing for that.
  • You run long stories and want lorebooks, rule-based Playbooks and paid memory tools that summarize older chats.

Skip it if

  • You want an app from the App Store or Google Play. Saucepan runs only in a browser.
  • You want to know who runs the service. The people behind it aren't named, and its two legal pages name different company types.
  • You need fast replies at peak times. Saucepan says heavy demand caused long waits and several crashes in October 2026.

How we put this together: We read Saucepan's pricing page, FAQ, models page, terms of service (last modified October 4, 2026), privacy policy (July 3, 2026), community and content guidelines, safety controls, suicide prevention protocol and eight official announcements from April 2025 to October 2026, all on October 19, 2026, plus app-store searches and published third-party reviews. We did not sign up or test the app.

Looking for an alternative to Saucepan AI?

If Saucepan AI isn't the right fit, these roleplay apps cover similar ground. We've researched each one from its official pages, the same way as this page. Their adult content settings are only for users 18 and over.

What is Saucepan AI?

Saucepan AI is a browser-based roleplay site where you chat with characters (“companions”) that other users create and share. It allows adult roleplay for 18+ users on companions marked “Spicy,” and everyone else can filter those out. The terms name grubs LLC, doing business as Saucepan and registered in Delaware, as the operator, with California law governing disputes.

The team behind it isn’t named. Its FAQ says the founders previously built large AI systems for big companies, and its Support page describes a small, self-funded team that runs the site alongside day jobs and hosts its own models on its own servers. The earliest official announcement is dated April 29, 2025, and sign-ups needed a referral code until Saucepan+ launched on December 31, 2025.

Beyond chat, Saucepan has personas, lorebooks (background notes the AI draws on), Playbooks that switch those notes on and off as a story moves, voice playback, a group “Party Mode” where friends vote on replies, and community posts. No built-in image generation appears on its official pages; creators upload their own character images.

How much does Saucepan AI cost?

Saucepan AI is free to use, and Saucepan+ costs $6, $18 or $48 a month, or $5, $15 or $40 a month billed yearly. Prices from the official pricing page, read October 19, 2026:

PlanMonthlyBilled yearlyPremium creditsMinimum context
Spoonless (free)$0$020 a day12k tokens
Teaspoon$6$5 a month (about $60 a year)72 a day, up to 200 saved25k tokens
Porcelain Spoon$18$15 a month (about $180 a year)300 a day, up to 800 saved28k tokens
Ladle$48$40 a month (about $480 a year)Unlimited, subject to fair use30k tokens

One credit covers one premium-model message. Free credits reset on a rolling 24 hours, while subscribers get an hourly top-up and can bank unused credits up to their cap. Paid tiers also get priority when servers are busy, Smart Memories, automatic memory summaries, site themes and a supporter badge. Ladle adds 300 daily voice credits and a free Teaspoon seat to give away.

Saucepan takes credit and debit cards, including prepaid cards, through a third-party checkout. A separate currency called chips buys cosmetics and late event entries; chip prices are shown only to signed-in users. Prices haven’t changed since launch, though the free premium allowance rose from 13 to 20 a day.

What do you get free on Saucepan AI?

You get unlimited chats on Saucepan’s in-house models, 20 premium messages a day and every creation tool. The free tier also includes chat memories of up to 1,500 tokens per chat, 10 saved outside model connections, 10 chat folders and 1 GB of image storage. Saucepan’s FAQ promises that unlimited, uncensored free messages will stay, but warns that replies can be slow, and paying users skip the line when servers are busy. There is no trial of the paid tiers.

Which models does Saucepan AI use, and can you bring your own key?

Saucepan runs its own models and also accepts keys for outside ones. Its models page lists free in-house models such as Arita, Kojima and Notogawa, and premium models Hirosaki, Tatsuno and Urasa. Saucepan says Hirosaki is built on DeepSeek.

Since November 2025 you can add your own API key for vetted providers, which launched with OpenAI, Anthropic and DeepSeek. Since May 2026 you can also add custom endpoints, including OpenRouter, but only on companions whose creator switches that option on; it is off by default. Saucepan charges nothing for outside models, though the provider bills you, and it says it gives them only limited support.

How does Saucepan AI’s memory work?

Saucepan uses editable chat memories, short notes such as names and plot points that are added to each reply. Everyone can write them by hand, up to 1,500 tokens per chat on the free tier. Saucepan+ adds Smart Memories, which store up to 10,000 tokens per chat and load the most relevant notes each turn, plus automatic summaries of older messages. Since October 14, 2026, paid accounts also get automatic compaction, which merges older memories to free space. Free users can merge memories manually.

What do published reviews say about Saucepan AI?

Independent coverage is thin, and no established tech outlet has reviewed Saucepan. AIToolServices calls it a legitimate choice for adults who value creative freedom, praising the unlimited free tier, lorebooks and support for your own model keys. It cautions that the people behind the site are hidden and that “free forever” is only a promise. NeuronFeed’s startup profile lists an April 2025 launch, a team of 1 to 10 and no disclosed owners or funding.

The recurring points across these sources and Saucepan’s own update posts:

  • The free tier is generous by roleplay-site standards, and paid tiers start at $6.
  • Development is fast, with 40 official update posts between April 2025 and October 2026.
  • Busy periods bring slow replies, and Saucepan reported crashes in October 2026.
  • There is no store app, and Trustpilot had no profile for the site on October 19, 2026.

Is Saucepan AI safe?

Saucepan has adult-focused but fairly clear policies, though its age check is light outside a few countries and its legal pages disagree on the company name. What its pages say:

TopicWhat Saucepan says
Minimum age18; suspected under-18 accounts are removed
Age checkClick-through gate; card-based Certified.ID check for Spicy content in the UK, Australia and Brazil
Content rulesNo characters who are or look like minors, no real people, no photorealistic images on companions
Training on chatsOpt-in only and off by default
Data saleSays it doesn’t sell or share personal data
DeletionSelf-serve account deletion; backups cleared within 30 days
Crisis supportScreens messages for self-harm risk and shows resources such as 988
Outside modelsWarns it can’t promise the same privacy when you use them

The terms name grubs LLC while the privacy policy names Grubs Inc., and neither page names the people in charge. No breach, lawsuit or regulator action naming Saucepan turned up as of October 19, 2026, and it was not among the services Australia’s eSafety Commissioner sent notices to in October 2025. A Gridinsoft scan in September 2026 gave the domain 82 out of 100 with no malware flags. Users can hide, restrict or block other users and filter Spicy content and warning tags.

How do you cancel Saucepan+?

You cancel from your account settings, and access lasts until the end of the billing cycle. The steps, from Saucepan’s settings and pricing FAQ:

  1. Open Settings and go to the Saucepan+ page.
  2. Select Manage Subscription to open the payment portal.
  3. Cancel the plan there and keep the confirmation.

Refunds are “generally” not given, though Saucepan says it may help if you file a support ticket with a good reason. The terms warn that a chargeback can get your account suspended, so contact support first. You must cancel before deleting your account.

Frequently asked questions

Is Saucepan AI free?
Yes. Saucepan AI's free Spoonless tier gives unlimited messages on its in-house models, 20 premium-model credits a day on a rolling 24 hours, at least 12k tokens of context and basic chat memories. Saucepan+ adds more premium credits and memory tools for $6, $18 or $48 a month, or $5, $15 or $40 a month billed yearly.
Is Saucepan AI down?
Saucepan has no public status page, so check its Discord server or the r/SaucepanAI subreddit for live notices. On October 14, 2026 the team said a surge of new users had lengthened wait times and crashed the site several times, and that it had moved research hardware onto site traffic as a stopgap.
Can you use a proxy or your own API key in Saucepan AI?
Yes. Saucepan lets you add your own API key for vetted providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic and DeepSeek, at no charge from Saucepan. Since May 2026 you can also add custom endpoints, including OpenRouter, but only on companions whose creator allows it. Saucepan says outside models get limited support and weaker privacy protections.
Is there a Saucepan AI app?
No store app. Saucepan isn't on the App Store or Google Play, and its own Install App page explains how to add the website to your phone or desktop home screen from the browser. Similarly named App Store apps, such as Saucier and SousEye, are unrelated cooking tools.
