Is Character.AI safe? Teen rules, privacy and lawsuits explained
Character.AI is safer for teens than it was, but not risk-free. Since November 2025, users under 18 can't chat with characters, and age is checked by an estimation model with a selfie fallback. For adults, chats can train its models and data goes to ad partners. Common Sense Media still advises no use under 18.
Is Character.AI safe for kids and teens?
Character.AI has cut the biggest teen risk, open-ended chat, but parent guides still advise against it for under-18s. Since November 24, 2025, users under 18 in the US can’t chat with characters. They get “reading mode”: they can browse, view past chats, create characters, scenes and videos, and use guided Stories, but not hold a conversation. Character.AI said similar changes would follow in other countries.
Common Sense Media rates Character.AI “Unacceptable Risk” and says no one under 18 should use it, though that assessment dates from April 2025, before the chat removal. Qustodio also advises against it for minors, citing harmful roleplay and emotional attachment, and warns that selfie checks can be gamed. The minimum age for an account is still 13, or 16 in the EU and UK.
How does Character.AI check users’ ages?
Character.AI runs every account through age assurance. The steps, from its help center:
- An in-house model estimates age from signals such as login details and on-platform activity. Users it judges to be adults aren’t asked for anything.
- Users flagged as under 18 can accept the teen experience or verify with Persona, a third-party provider, by taking a selfie.
- If the selfie check is inconclusive, Persona asks for a government ID. Without it, the account stays in the teen experience.
Character.AI says it never receives the selfie or ID, and that Persona deletes them within 7 days. Paying for c.ai+ doesn’t skip the check, and a Google account’s age on file doesn’t count.
Can parents see what their teen does on Character.AI?
Only screen time, and only if the teen agrees. Parental Insights lets a teen invite a trusted adult from settings; the adult verifies they are an adult through k-ID, then sees daily screen time and a weekly digest. They can’t read messages, see content or set time limits, and either side can unlink at any time. To block the app, parents need device-level controls. Apple rates the app 18+, while Google Play still rates it Teen.
What content does Character.AI allow?
Character.AI bans sexual content and nudity for every user, at any age, and paying doesn’t change that. Its community guidelines also ban promoting self-harm, suicide or eating disorders, real-world violence and gore, and hate. Automated filters check both your messages and the AI’s replies, backed by user reports and a trust and safety team. Each chat shows a reminder that the character isn’t a real person, and self-harm signals trigger links to crisis help such as 988 in the US. Dark or villainous fictional characters are allowed within those limits.
Is Character.AI safe for adults’ privacy?
Character.AI collects a lot and shares some of it. What its privacy policy and store labels say:
| Topic | What the official pages say |
|---|---|
| Model training | Chats can train its AI models. A setting called “Improve the Model for Everyone” opts new chats out; its help article describes it for EU and UK users, and whether US users see it couldn’t be confirmed |
| Advertising | Data goes to advertising and analytics partners for tailored ads. Apple’s label lists cross-app tracking; Google Play’s says nothing is shared |
| Who sees chats | Creators can’t see your chats with their characters |
| Encryption | No encryption claim in the privacy policy or terms. Google Play’s label says data is encrypted in transit |
| Deletion | Account deletion is permanent. A data export takes 3 to 4 weeks |
| Company sale | The policy allows data to transfer in a sale of company assets |
In December 2024, a configuration error showed parts of some users’ account pages to others for about ten minutes; the company said under 0.01% of users were affected.
What lawsuits and investigations does Character.AI face?
Character.AI has faced several family lawsuits and state actions over harm to young users. These are allegations unless stated:
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| Oct 2024 | Megan Garcia sued in federal court in Florida, alleging the app contributed to her 14-year-old son’s suicide. In May 2025 a judge declined to dismiss the case on free-speech grounds |
| Dec 2024 to Sep 2025 | More families sued in Texas, Colorado and New York, alleging the app is harmful by design for minors |
| Jan 7, 2026 | Character.AI, its founders and Google disclosed settlements in the Garcia case and four similar cases. Terms weren’t disclosed, and no liability was found |
| Sep 11, 2025 | The FTC sent study orders to seven companies, including Character.AI, on how companion chatbots protect children. This is a study, not enforcement |
| Dec 2024 and Aug 2025 | The Texas attorney general opened investigations, including into whether chatbots were marketed as mental health tools |
| Jan 8, 2026 | Kentucky’s attorney general sued under state consumer protection and data laws |
| May 5, 2026 | Pennsylvania sued over characters that allegedly posed as licensed doctors |
What does the 2026 bankruptcy mean for safety?
It adds uncertainty. Character.AI entered a Chapter 11 sale on October 12, 2026, and says it will shut the platform if no buyer emerges. On October 14, Colorado’s attorney general led 38 attorneys general in asking the court to protect children’s safety and privacy in any sale. They warned that the teen restrictions are voluntary and a buyer could reverse them, and pointed to the volume of sensitive chats, including children’s, the company holds.
How can you make Character.AI safer to use?
A few steps lower the risk for teens and adults:
- Turn off “Improve the Model for Everyone” in Data and Privacy settings, if your account shows it.
- Don’t share real names, addresses, school details or photos in chats.
- For a teen, use device-level parental controls, and set up Parental Insights together if they agree.
- Talk with teens about emotional attachment to characters, which parent guides flag as a key risk.
- If you want to leave, request your data export before deleting the account, since deletion is permanent.

Frequently asked questions
- Is Character.AI now 18+?
- Partly. Character.AI still lets people open an account from age 13 (16 in the EU and UK), but since November 24, 2025, only users verified as 18 or older can chat with characters in the US. Teens get a reading mode where they can browse, create characters and use guided Stories, but not hold open-ended chats.
- Does Character.AI track you?
- To a degree, yes. Its Apple App Store privacy label says location, contact details, identifiers and usage data may be used to track you across other companies' apps and websites, and its privacy policy shares data with advertising partners for tailored ads. Google Play's label says nothing is shared, which conflicts with the policy.
- Does Character.AI leak your chats?
- Creators can't see your conversations with their characters, according to Character.AI's help center. In December 2024 a configuration error exposed parts of some users' account pages for about ten minutes; the company said under 0.01% of users were affected. Chats can also train its models unless you turn that off, and the privacy policy lets data move in a company sale.
- Can parents monitor Character.AI?
- Only in a limited way. Parental Insights lets a teen invite a verified adult, who then sees the teen's daily screen time and a weekly digest. The adult can't read messages or set time limits, and the link starts from the teen's account. Device-level parental controls are the only way to block the app outright.
