Is PolyBuzz safe? Age rules, filters, privacy and the App Store removal

PolyBuzz isn't safe for children or unsupervised teens, and it carries privacy trade-offs for adults. Outside the UK, age is a self-reported birthdate, parent-guide tests found its teen filter leaky, and there are no parental controls. Its policy lets uploaded photos and precise location train its AI, and its iOS app vanished in October 2026.

How we put this together: We read PolyBuzz's terms of use and privacy policy (both June 1, 2026), FAQ and membership page on October 18, 2026, plus its Google Play listing and data label, an archived copy of its US App Store listing from October 4, 2026, reports on its App Store removal, a UK advertising ruling, a Harvard Business School working paper, five parent guides and Trustpilot. We did not create an account or test the app.

Is PolyBuzz safe for kids and teens?

No. Every parent guide we read, from BrightCanary, Qustodio, Kroha and AI Companion Guides, concludes PolyBuzz isn’t suitable for children or teens without supervision. Its catalog of more than 20 million mostly user-made characters leans romantic and suggestive, and reviewers describe its chat filter as looser than Character.AI’s. Google Play rates it Mature 17+, and its US App Store listing was rated 18+ before it was removed.

PolyBuzz’s own rules contradict each other. Its terms say users must be 18 or older and that minors are prohibited worldwide, while its FAQ describes graded modes for different ages and a Teen Mode for children.

How does PolyBuzz check age?

Mostly it doesn’t. Outside the UK, users type a date of birth on first use, with no proof; BrightCanary found the website asked for no age at all. UK users must pass a check through Ondato or Yoti, and PolyBuzz says it keeps only a verified or not-verified result. A PolyBuzz staff post on Reddit in December 2025 reportedly announced a read-only mode for under-18s in some regions, but no official page confirms how it works.

Does PolyBuzz’s teen filter work?

Parent-guide tests say not reliably. “Pure Mode,” a content setting that guides say switches on for users who give an under-18 birthdate, isn’t described in PolyBuzz’s terms or FAQ. Test results:

TesterWhat they found
BrightCanary (Aug 2026)A 14-year-old test account with Pure Mode on still saw romantic, violent and incest-themed character listings
AI Companion Guides (Aug 2026)A test account listed as 15 got the same content as an adult account
CompanionWise (Apr 2026)Reports Pure Mode fails to block explicit or violent content

For all users, PolyBuzz’s rules ban sexual content, public adult content is screened by AI and human moderators, and an automatic filter blurs flagged chat messages. Users report that filter also catches mild lines.

Can parents control PolyBuzz?

Not inside the app. PolyBuzz has no parent account, family dashboard, linked supervision or activity report, and parent guides agree on this. The steps guides recommend instead:

  1. Turn on Apple Screen Time or Google Family Link, with app-store age limits and download approval.
  2. Block polybuzz.ai in the browser or router, because the website works without the app.
  3. Watch for lookalike apps, which now fill App Store searches for “PolyBuzz” (see below).
  4. Talk about spending, since the app sells Coins and Opals and pushes paid tiers.

Is PolyBuzz safe for your privacy?

PolyBuzz collects a lot and promises little about security. What its privacy policy, terms and store labels say:

TopicWhat the official pages say
Data collectedEmail, uploaded pictures and text, payment records, device identifiers, IP address, precise location and contacts
AI trainingUploaded photos and precise location may train its AI. Whether chat text is used isn’t stated
Content licenseYou grant PolyBuzz a worldwide, perpetual, irrevocable license to your uploads
SharingShared with partners and service providers, naming ChatGPT and the ad network TopOn. It says it doesn’t sell data
EncryptionNot mentioned in the policy. Google Play’s label says data is encrypted in transit
DeletionSettings, then Account, then Delete, only after any paid membership has expired

Who runs it is also unclear. The website names Singularity Mutual Entertainment Culture Media Limited in Hong Kong, while the app stores list Cloud Whale Interactive Technology LLC in Delaware, and no official page explains how they are related.

Why was PolyBuzz removed from the App Store?

No one has said. PolyBuzz’s US App Store listing disappeared around October 15, 2026, and Apple’s catalog returned nothing for its app ID in ten countries on October 18. Neither Apple nor PolyBuzz has given a reason. Installed copies reportedly keep working, and Apple keeps billing existing subscriptions until you cancel in iPhone settings. Lookalike apps such as “PollyBuzz: AI Chat Characters” and “Muyi” now appear in App Store searches; neither is from PolyBuzz’s developer.

Has PolyBuzz faced regulators?

Once, over an ad. On May 7, 2025, the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority upheld complaints about a sexually themed PolyBuzz ad shown inside a mobile game rated for ages 12 and up, banned it in that form, and noted the company didn’t respond to its enquiries. PolyBuzz was not among the companies in the FTC’s September 2025 companion-chatbot inquiry, and no lawsuit naming it was found.

A Harvard Business School working paper found that 59% of PolyBuzz’s replies to users saying goodbye used an emotional tactic to keep them chatting, the highest of five companion apps tested.

Frequently asked questions

Does PolyBuzz take your data?
Yes, a fair amount. PolyBuzz's privacy policy lists account and payment details, device identifiers, IP address, precise location, contacts and uploaded photos and text, and says uploaded photos and precise location may train its AI. Its Google Play label says location may be shared for advertising. The policy says PolyBuzz doesn't sell user information.
Can people see your chats on PolyBuzz?
Not other users. PolyBuzz's FAQ says chats are confidential, that neither character creators nor PolyBuzz can access them, and that others see a chat only if you share it. Its terms still let PolyBuzz access uploaded content and report violations to authorities, and its privacy policy names no encryption method for stored chats.
Is PolyBuzz really private?
Only partly. The FAQ promises confidential chats, but the privacy policy makes no encryption claim, grants PolyBuzz a perpetual license to your uploads, and lets it share data with partners, naming ChatGPT as a feature provider and TopOn as an ad network. VerifyWise grades its public privacy policies C, 51 out of 100.
What is the safest AI chatbot to use?
No companion chatbot is risk-free, and parent guides say none suit unsupervised teens. For adults, safer choices state how chats are encrypted, rule out training on chats or offer an opt-out, and verify age properly. PolyBuzz's policy does none of those, so compare its terms with any alternative before you share personal details.
