Is Janitor AI safe? Age checks, adult content and privacy explained
Janitor AI is a reasonable choice for adults who understand its limits, but it isn't safe for minors. It is an 18+ roleplay site where adult storylines are common, age checks apply only in Australia, Brazil and the UK, and there are no parental controls. It says it doesn't sell data, but chats aren't end-to-end encrypted.

Is Janitor AI safe for teens?
No. Janitor AI’s terms bar anyone under 18, and its library is built for adult roleplay. Characters are labeled “Limited” (no romantic or sexual elements) or “Limitless” (may include them), and the signed-out homepage’s popular feed showed Limitless characters on October 18, 2026. Users can also publish chats that others view and comment on. CompanionWise rates Janitor in its lowest safety tier and unsuitable for under-18s.
Janitor has no parental controls: no parent dashboard, supervised accounts, time limits or activity reports. The only ways to block it are device-level controls and app-store age restrictions. Apple rates the app 18+ and Google Play rates it Mature 17+.
Does Janitor AI verify your age?
Only in three countries. Since April 24, 2026, users connecting from Australia and Brazil, and since June 15, 2026, from the UK, must pass a check through k-ID: an on-device face age estimate, a government ID scan or a reusable AgeKey. Janitor says it receives only a yes or no. Everywhere else, including the US, users simply state they are 18 or older, and Janitor says it has no plans to extend checks. Its own announcement notes the check depends only on IP address.
Janitor blocked UK users from July 24, 2025, rather than add checks under the UK’s Online Safety Act, then returned with verification in June 2026.
What content does Janitor AI allow?
The website allows adult roleplay for adults on Limitless characters, within rules that ban a long list of content in every mode. What its terms and guidelines say:
| Topic | Rule |
|---|---|
| Minors | Any sexualization or depiction of minors is banned, including fictional and minor-coded characters. Characters must be clearly stated as adults |
| Other banned content | Gore, sexual violence, bestiality, trafficking, extremism, hate speech, harassment, doxxing and encouraging self-harm |
| Images | Avatar and character images may not contain nudity or explicit content |
| Mobile app | Restricted by default: adult characters hidden, replies lean safe-for-work, until a website setting is changed |
| Self-harm | Shows crisis resources such as 988 and restricts related AI replies |
| Moderation | Automated screening before content is published, plus human moderators reviewing reports |
Is Janitor AI safe for your privacy?
Janitor’s privacy commitments are better than many roleplay sites’, with gaps. What its policy and labels say:
- Data sale: Janitor says it doesn’t sell personal data and never shares private conversations for advertising.
- Training: the policy lists improving its AI systems as a use of data but doesn’t say whether chats train its model, and no opt-out is described.
- Encryption: traffic uses HTTPS. Whether chats are encrypted at rest isn’t stated, and no end-to-end encryption is claimed.
- Deletion: deleting an account starts a 30-day restore window, then it is permanent. Some records, such as transactions, are kept for legal reasons.
- Store labels: Apple’s label lists no tracking, and Google Play’s says no data is shared with third parties.
- Incidents: Janitor disclosed an April 10, 2026 caching error that briefly showed some users the wrong character page, and said chats and API keys were unaffected. No data breach involving Janitor AI was found in news coverage.
Are outside models and proxies safe on Janitor AI?
They add risk you should understand. Janitor lets you connect an outside AI model with your own API key, which its terms allow. When you do, that provider receives your chats under its own terms, and its own filters apply instead of Janitor’s model. RoboRhythms warns that unofficial proxies and fake setup pages can steal API keys or read chats, so use only providers you’d trust with the conversation.
Are there fake Janitor AI sites?
Yes. The official site is janitorai.com, and the only official apps are named “Janitor: Interactive Stories” from JanitorAI on the App Store and Google Play. janitor.ai, without “ai” in the main name, is an unrelated writing-tools site. A third-party guide reports that chatjanitor.com, janitorai.chat and janitoraichat.com are copycats; those behaviors couldn’t be independently confirmed. Janitor’s terms say unofficial clients and modified apps can get an account suspended.
Has Janitor AI faced regulators or lawsuits?
No regulator action or lawsuit naming Janitor AI was found as of October 18, 2026. It was not among the seven companies in the FTC’s September 2025 companion-chatbot inquiry, or the four providers that Australia’s eSafety Commissioner sent legal notices in October 2025. In 2023, OpenAI cut off its API access, after which Janitor built its own model. Trustpilot showed 2.6 out of 5 from 34 reviews, with complaints about bans, support and age checks.
How can adults use Janitor AI more safely?
A few habits lower the risk:
- Use janitorai.com or the official apps only, and type the address directly.
- Keep real names, addresses and photos out of chats and personas.
- If you connect an outside model, use a known provider and a key you can revoke.
- Keep chats private unless you mean to publish them.
- On a shared device, leave the app in its restricted default mode.

Frequently asked questions
- Does Janitor AI sell my data?
- Janitor AI says it doesn't sell personal data and never shares private conversations with third parties for advertising. It does pass data to service providers for hosting, sign-in, payments, email and security, naming Supabase, Stripe, Resend and Cloudflare. If you connect an outside AI model, that provider receives your chats under its own terms.
- Is the Janitor AI app the same as the website?
- It uses the same account and character library, but the app starts in a restricted mode: adult characters are hidden from search and feeds, replies lean safe-for-work and some explicit words are blocked. A setting on the website lifts that, making the app match the site. Some features, such as Router, are web-only.
- Is Janitor AI safe for kids?
- No. Janitor AI's terms bar anyone under 18, many community characters carry romantic or sexual storylines, and outside Australia, Brazil and the UK the only age check is the user's own statement. There are no parent dashboards, time limits or activity reports, so device-level controls are the only way to block it.
