Chub AI vs Janitor AI: free use, paid plans, memory and safety compared

Janitor AI is the better free option: chat on its own model is unlimited, and janitor+ costs $12.99 a month. Chub AI is the stronger paid one: $20 a month, paid in crypto, buys large hosted models, image generation and lorebooks. Both are adults-only roleplay hubs with self-declared age checks, and neither suits teens.

Which is better, Chub AI or Janitor AI?

Neither wins outright; it depends on whether you’ll pay. RoboRhythms, after a month using both side by side, calls Janitor the better free option and Chub the better paid one. CompanionWise picks Janitor for a free core and roleplay depth, and Chub for a large library and lorebook memory. AI Tool Chooser calls Chub the easier start because of its library.

How much do Chub AI and Janitor AI cost?

Janitor AI is free to chat and $12.99 a month for janitor+, while Chub AI’s only plan is $20 a month, paid in crypto. Official prices read October 18, 2026:

Chub AIJanitor AI
Free useOne-time trial credits worth a few dozen messages on its modelsUnlimited chat on JLLM with about 9,000 tokens of memory

How you payCrypto onlyCard, Apple or Google
Bring your own model keyYes, paid to that providerYes, paid to that provider
RefundsNone unless Chub grants oneGenerally none, except where law requires

Chub dropped a $5 “Mercury” plan in 2026, according to RoboRhythms, which also reports 20 free messages a day; Chub’s own page mentions only trial credits. Chub says it takes only crypto because card companies pressure sites like it over content.

Which has better memory?

Chub AI gives more memory tools; Janitor gives more free context. Chub combines chat summaries with keyword lorebooks, which add background notes to the AI’s prompt when a keyword appears, and its paid Soji model lists a 60K context. Janitor’s free model sees about 9,000 tokens, janitor+ about five times that, and you can keep a short user-edited Chat Memory note. Neither describes automatic long-term memory like companion apps such as Nomi.

Which has more characters and features?

Both are huge community character hubs, and reported library sizes vary wildly. Reviewers put Chub at about 200,000 characters and Janitor anywhere from 32,000 to over 3 million, and neither publishes an official count. Chub adds branching chat trees, group chats, add-ons called Stages, image generation and text-to-speech. Janitor adds public chats others can comment on, personas and custom profiles, but no voice, images or video.

Which is safer, Chub AI or Janitor AI?

Janitor has the stronger safety setup, though both rely on users stating they are 18. What official pages and regulators say:

CompanionWise puts both in its lowest safety tier and calls both unsuitable for under-18s.

Can you use Chub AI and Janitor AI on a phone?

Janitor, yes; Chub, only in a browser. Janitor’s official apps are called “Janitor: Interactive Stories” on iOS and Android, and they open in a filtered mode by default. Chub has no official store app, and an App Store listing named “Chub ai: Image Generator” comes from an unrelated individual developer.

Frequently asked questions

Which AI is better than Janitor AI?
It depends on whether you'll pay. Reviewers say Chub AI is the better paid choice, with a large hosted model and built-in image generation for $20 a month, while Janitor AI stays ahead for free use. For a companion that remembers you without setup, they point to hosted companion apps such as Kindroid or Nomi instead of character hubs.
What is better than Chub AI?
For free chat, reviewers point to Janitor AI, which has no daily cap on its own model and official phone apps. Chub's main drawbacks are crypto-only payment, no official app and weak safety findings from Australia's regulator, so apps with card billing and stronger age checks, such as Kindroid, may suit some adults better.
Is Chub AI free?
Partly. Browsing Chub's library, creating characters and chatting through your own model key cost nothing on Chub's side. Its own hosted models come only with one-time trial credits worth a few dozen messages, per its subscription page, after which the $20-a-month plan is needed. One reviewer reports 20 free messages a day, which Chub doesn't confirm.
