Zeta vs Character.AI: price, free plans, filters and teen rules compared

Zeta suits people who want free, unlimited story roleplay with multi-character plots and accept ads; teens 13 to 17 can still chat on it. Character.AI suits adults who want voice calls, more memory tools and a cheaper $9.99 plan, but it filed for Chapter 11 on October 12, 2026. Neither allows sexual roleplay by default.

The short version

Pick Zeta if

  • You want multi-character stories with a world and a cast, built by a large creator community.
  • You're 13 to 17 and want to chat, not just read. Zeta allows teens with a guardian's consent; Character.AI no longer does.
  • You'd rather sit through ads than pay, and want unlimited text chat on the free model.

Pick Character.AI if

  • You want voice calls, pinned memories and an automatic Facts memory. Character.AI has them; Zeta doesn't offer voice calls.
  • You want the cheapest paid plan. c.ai+ costs $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year, against $14.99 a month for the zeta pass.
  • You want a more established service with a published age-assurance process, and accept that its future depends on a court-run sale.

Which is better, Zeta or Character.AI?

It depends on your age and what you want from a story. Zeta, from Korea’s Scatter Lab, is built around user-made “plots” that bundle a world and several characters, gives unlimited text chat on its free model, and still lets 13 to 17 year olds chat with a guardian’s consent. Character.AI, the larger US platform, has a bigger toolset (voice calls, pinned memories, images and video) and a cheaper paid plan, but under-18 users can only read, and the company is in a court-supervised sale.

Which is cheaper, Zeta or Character.AI?

Character.AI is cheaper. Its c.ai+ plan costs $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year, against $14.99 a month for the zeta pass, which has no yearly option. US prices, Zeta read October 19, 2026 and Character.AI October 18:

The bigger cost difference is what the plans include. Zeta’s pass removes ads and adds 200 Pieces a month, but its better models (koji and luca) still cost Pieces per turn. c.ai+ includes Character.AI’s premium chat styles with no per-message charge.

Which has the better free plan?

Both are generous, and both are paid for with ads. Zeta’s free model has no message limit, and free users get one private plot. Character.AI gives unlimited messages on its standard chat styles, but adds slow mode at busy times and daily caps on some features. Reviewers of each complain about ad frequency: PocketAnimus calls Zeta’s ads its most common complaint, and Character.AI added more ad placements for free users in 2026.

Which has better memory and features?

Character.AI has more memory tools. Zeta’s help center says each reply uses only the plot profile, your chat profile and that chat’s history, plus creator-written lorebooks; its paid models keep longer context. Character.AI offers Story Memory, 15 pinned memories free and 30 paid, automatic Facts on c.ai+ and Lorebooks. Reviewers report memory drift in long stories on both.

On features, Zeta focuses on text stories, Smart Reply suggestions and AI snapshot images. Character.AI adds voice calls with custom voices, image generation, talking-avatar video and guided Stories.

Which is safer for teens?

Character.AI is stricter, and Zeta is under more active scrutiny. Both set 13 as the minimum age, but Character.AI removed open-ended chat for under-18s in November 2025 and now uses an age-estimation model with a Persona selfie or ID check for anyone flagged as a minor. Zeta lets 13 to 17 year olds chat with a guardian’s agreement and hasn’t published how it checks ages in the US.

At a Korean National Assembly audit on October 12, 2026, lawmakers said Zeta accounts without adult verification still produced self-harm and sexual content. Scatter Lab reportedly plans teen time limits within 2026. Apple rates Zeta 13+ and Character.AI 18+; Google Play rates Zeta Mature 17+ and Character.AI Teen.

Which has stricter content filters?

Character.AI’s rules are stricter on paper. It bans sexual content for every user, with no switch and no paid exemption. Zeta filters every chat and defaults to Safe Mode, but its terms describe an adults-only Unlimited Mode with looser limits. Its English help center says it won’t build an 18+ service, and we couldn’t confirm that US users can turn Unlimited Mode on. Isekai Zero, which makes a competing app, reports that some users arriving from Character.AI welcomed Zeta’s September 2026 tightening.

Which is better for privacy?

Neither stands out, and both train on chats. Zeta uses conversations to train its AI unless you email privacy@scatterlab.co.kr with an opt-out, and shares identifiers with ad partners. Character.AI also trains on chats, offers a model-improvement setting, and shares data with ad partners. Neither claims end-to-end encryption. Character.AI’s policy allows user data to move to a buyer in an asset sale, which matters during its bankruptcy.

Should Character.AI’s bankruptcy change your choice?

It’s a reason not to prepay for a year. Character.AI started a Chapter 11 sale on October 12, 2026, with Disney as the opening $20 million bidder for a license to some of its intellectual property, and expects the sale to finish by late November or early December 2026. Service and billing continue for now; it filed its formal notice of the case on October 15. If no workable bid emerges, it says the platform will be wound down. Zeta faces no such process, though its US launch is recent.
