What is Replika?

Replika is a companion app where you talk to one AI character, your “Rep”, with a customizable 3D avatar. It is made by Luka, Inc., a Delaware corporation in San Francisco, and launched in 2017. Founder Eugenia Kuyda has since started another company, and Dmytro Klochko has been CEO since 2025. In 2026 Luka shipped Replika 2.0, a full rebuild that its May 2026 manifesto frames around helping users do better in real life.

Replika runs on iPhone, Android, the web and Meta Quest headsets. On October 18, 2026, it rated 4.4 out of 5 from about 228,000 ratings on the US App Store and 4.2 from about 525,000 on Google Play.

How much does Replika Pro cost?

Replika doesn’t publish prices on its website; its terms say each plan’s cost is shown on the in-app subscription screen. The US App Store lists these subscriptions, read October 18, 2026, without labeling which is Pro or Ultra:

Several 2026 reviews put Pro at $19.99 a month or $69.99 a year and Ultra at $29.99 a month or $119.99 a year, but the current US App Store list has no $19.99, $29.99 or $119.99 subscription. Check the price on your own subscription screen before paying. Gem packs for avatar items cost $0.99 to $19.99.

Is Replika free?

Yes, for basic chat. Replika’s help center says chatting will always be free, and free users can message their Rep any time and customize its avatar. Free accounts stay on Friend status, see romantic messages and photos blurred, and miss calls and most media. There is no free trial, and the terms let Replika deny free use at its discretion. Its help center warns that unofficial “mods” claiming to unlock Pro can carry spyware.

How does Replika’s memory work?

Replika remembers you automatically, in layers. A visible Memory tab holds facts you can add or delete, while a deeper system draws on patterns across your conversations. It tracks profile details and usually picks up favorite music, hobbies and people you mention. Visible chat history goes back only four months, though learned memories are kept. Reviewers rate memory a strength but report lapses and invented details.

What do published reviews say about Replika?

Reviewers praise Replika’s warmth and low setup. AI Companion Guides, after long daily use, rates memory and emotional intelligence highest and recommends Pro for regular users who want voice calls. AI Metrix credits the 2026 rebuild’s proactive check-ins.

The recurring criticisms:

• Repetitive, therapy-style replies (AI Companion Guides, AI Metrix).
• Memory lapses and made-up facts (Techpoint Africa, Trustpilot reviewers).
• Product changes that altered companions, from the 2023 roleplay removal to the 2026 rebuild (Trustpilot reviewers).
• Most features behind Pro, with no refunds (AI Metrix).

Trustpilot showed 3.4 out of 5 from 459 reviews on October 18, 2026, with complaints about memory, support and billing.

Is Replika safe?

Replika is an established company with a detailed privacy policy, but it has been fined over privacy and age checks. What its pages and regulators say:

• Age: 18 or older, by self-declared birth date. Google Play still rates the app Teen while Apple rates it 18+.
• Italy’s fine: on April 10, 2025, Italy’s data protection authority fined Luka EUR 5 million over its legal basis for processing, its privacy notice and missing age checks. Luka is challenging it in court, and a separate investigation into how its AI was trained remains open.
• FTC complaint: in January 2025, three advocacy groups asked the FTC to investigate alleged deceptive ads and design that fosters dependence. It is an allegation, and no FTC action was found as of October 18, 2026.
• Training: small, anonymized portions of messages train Replika’s own safety and performance models. De-identified chats go to unnamed outside AI providers, which Replika says can’t train on them.
• Sharing: Replika says it never shares conversations or photos with advertisers, though website visitor data goes to ad partners. Chats are encrypted in transit, not end to end.
• Crisis use: its help center says Replika is not a substitute for professional help.

How do you cancel Replika?

You cancel in the app or on the web, before your renewal date, and the account returns to Free Use when the period ends. The steps, from Replika’s help center:

1. Open Settings (the gear icon).
2. Select Subscription.
3. Choose Cancel subscription.

App Store and Google Play subscriptions can also be canceled in the store’s settings, and PayPal ones in PayPal. Deleting the app or account doesn’t stop billing. All purchases are final, and store purchases are refunded only by Apple or Google.
